Armagnac, 1942

Barthelemy Carrere Armagnac

Armagnac is a distinctive kind of brandy produced in the Armagnac region in Gascony, southwest France. It is distilled from wine usually made from a blend of grapes traditionally using column stills rather than the pot stills used in the production of cognac. The resulting spirit is then aged in oak barrels before release.

This 1942 Armagnac displays notes of orchard fruit and beeswax with subtle traces of red apple, pears and pipe tobacco. The palate entry is loaded with rich, nut-like/nougaty tastes; at midpalate a rush of sweetened tobacco quickly gives way to flavours of dark caramel, honey and oaky vanilla.

Armagnac
In original wooden case

This rare 1942 vintage Armagnac is only available in strictly limited quantities.

Armagnac is the oldest spirit in the world, used as a medicine in former times it has been distilled and appreciated since 1411. The Owners of Baron de Sigognac, The Guasch family, have been in Gascony since the 12th century. They have owned the château at Bordeneuve since 1974 and are one of the region's largest courtier and negociant operations.

Once Armagnac is distilled the colourless spirit is aged in 420 litre oak barrels. It is here, in barrel, that the Armagnac leaches vanillins and tannins from the toasted oak which lend the spirit colour and flavour.

Graham's Port, 1942

Vintage Port (in neck, badly chipped capsule, unlabelled)

Declared by some shippers, despite the war, and in some cases declared and bottled in 1945 to celebrate Victory. First Vintage to be bottled exclusively in Portugal, rather than shipped in cask as was customary.

Little known, and production was small due to continued post-war restrictions, but well-cellared wines are still a pleasure.
